for Sustainable Urban Communities

The Stapleton Foundation has created a scavenger hunt for families, individuals and friends with two distinct routes: one for walkers and one for bikers.

In 2015, we celebrate the 20th anniversary of “The Green Book,” the seminal document that envisioned what could and should happen to the seven square miles of the former Stapleton Airport. This Stapleton Master Development Plan (known as The Green Book) was published in partnership with the Citizens Advisory Board (CAB), the Stapleton Tomorrow Committee, and the City and County of Denver.

About Stapleton Foundation:

The mission of the Stapleton Foundation is to advocate, sustain and realize the principles of the 1995 Stapleton Master Development Plan. Working with others, we will help create a community that is seamlessly connected to surrounding neighborhoods and communities and is a model in terms of education, employment, healthy living, housing, diversity, and sustainable development.

About the Green Book:

In 1995, the Stapleton Foundation published the Stapleton Master Development Plan (commonly known as “the Green Book”) in partnership with the Citizens Advisory Board (CAB) and the City and County of Denver.

This partnership successfully encouraged Mayor Wellington Webb and the Denver City Council to officially adopt the Green Book and to create the Stapleton Development Corporation (SDC) to implement the vision of the Green Book. More than 20 years later, the Master Development Plan is still considered a visionary model of how cities can break the pattern of urban sprawl.

The Green Book is a road map for achieving a number of seemingly unobtainable civic objectives: economic development and opportunity for all; benefits for adjacent neighborhoods; enhanced environmental quality and sustainability; high standards of urban design; educational and cultural opportunities; and social equity.

Guiding Principles

1. Environmental Responsibility:

The challenge of the next century will be the creation and management of urban environments that meet social needs and provide economic opportunity in a manner that preserves rather than degrades the natural environment.

2. Social Equity:

Equity, diversity and opportunity are fundamental to the objectives of the redevelopment program. Stapleton redevelopment shall provide broad access to social, cultural and economic opportunities for all segments of the community.

3. Economic Opportunity:

The Stapleton site shall be a regional center for job creation in diverse fields with emphasis on emerging technologies and industries.

4. Physical Design:

Transform the character and image of the airport site in a dramatic and decisive manner.
