The 2011 HGTV Green Home, located in the Central Park North neighborhood of Denver, Colorado, recently received a Platinum LEED certification– the highest rating a home can earn within the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program.  In addition, the home also received an Energy Star certification which acknowledges its energy efficiency.

The 2011 HGTV Green Home, which features construction and design elements that contribute to an energy efficient, cleaner and healthier living environment, is part of a grand prize package that will be given to one lucky viewer in August.  The 2011 HGTV Green Home Giveaway will be open for entries Thursday, April 14 through Thursday, June 2, 2011.  More information about the home and giveaway can be found at HGTV.com/greenhome.

The LEED certification signifies that the HGTV Green Home, with approximately 2400 square feet offinishedspace, meets rigorous standards for sustainable site development, water conservation, energy efficiency, materials selection, indoor environmental quality, proximity to transit and existing infrastructure and innovative design.  Of the 9,812 homes nationally that have received some level of LEED certification (certified, silver, gold, or platinum), less than 25% were platinum homes.  In Colorado where the home is located, 36 homes have earned the platinum rating.  LEED for Homes, a voluntary rating system that promotes the design and construction of high-performance green homes, is a project of the U.S. Green Building Council.

The 2011 HGTV Green Home also achieved an Energy Star Home Energy Rating System (HERS) score of 38, indicating that it exceeds governing energy conservation building codes by 62%.  In order for a home to qualify as Energy Star it must achieve a HERS score of 85 or lower.  The energy star scoring system is based on an index established by the Residential Energy Services Network (RESNET).

“We are proud of our commitment to the environment through the HGTV Green Home Giveaway,” said HGTV President Jim Samples.  “As we enter our fourth green home giveaway, we continue to hear from many of our viewers that they are interested in learning more about eco-friendly lifestyles.  The HGTV Green Home Giveaway provides an excellent opportunity to showcase examples of accessible approaches to green living while featuring the high level of style that our viewers expect.”
