Denver Police Academy Educates When They’re Not Training Recruits

The Denver Police Academy (DPA) has been in Central Park since 1995. Since then “our first job has been to train new recruits” said Sergeant Kevin Bray. When not training recruits, the DPA plays a vital role providing continuing education programs and additional training to Denver police officers and staff, as well as other law enforcement personnel across the Rocky Mountain region.

DPA also offers many programs for the community. One of DPA’s many programs is the 12 week (one night per week) Citizens Academy Program. The Citizens Academy Program is designed to familiarize Denver citizens with policy department policy and procedures. “The participants get a little bit of everything in this program from SWAT, traffic, arrest control techniques and use of less lethal weapons” said Sgt. Bray. The Citizens Academy Program is held two times per year and is free to the public. For additional information and class dates contact matthew.merrion@denvergov.org.

The Community Awareness Program (CAP) is another free interactive program which provides citizens an opportunity to recognize and prevent terrorist and criminal activity in their community. The program was developed in-line with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security If You See Something, Say Something campaign. To register visit www.thecell.org

“Our Women’s Safety Class has been very popular among the Central Park residents” said Sgt. Bray. The Women’s Safety classes are held frequently. For additional information regarding class dates call 303.370.1500.

The Denver Policy Academy provides a long and impressive list of educational and training programs (DIA training exercises, Youth Academy, City Attorney and probation department training, just to name a few) all provided by the seven staff members of DPA.

I, for one, am grateful they’re a part of the Central Park community.
