Give Back: Sand Creek Regional Greenway Partnership
By Kate Kramer and Katie Lampe

Did you know that Central Park is home to the only east/west off-road trail and greenway in northeast Denver?  The Sand Creek Regional Greenway (SCRG) runs through the center of Central Park. Work on the Greenway started when the Stapleton International Airport closed – and although much has been done, there is still much to do. We love volunteers!

Our Mission: The Sand Creek Regional Greenway Partnership (SCRGP) is a nonprofit, 501 (c) 3 organization that, in partnership with Aurora, Commerce City and Denver, seeks to preserve, improve, and promote the natural and recreational resources of the Sand Creek Regional Greenway.

Going west on the Greenway, you can connect to the South Platte Greenway in Commerce City, and going east you can ride to the High Line Canal Trail, and in the future, all the way to the Aurora Reservoir – on a safe, off-road trail.

Volunteer Opportunities:

  • Neighborhood Partners Environmental Team (NPET): Join your neighbors the first Saturday of March through November from 9am-noon to clean up the Sand Creek Regional Greenway, the Bluff Lake Nature Center and Westerly Creek.
  • Next Generation Partners: Are you knowledgeable about a particular environmentally related topic?  Do you work in a natural resource career?  Do you like working with kids?  Come help out with our Next Gen youth program, which provides vital environmental education programming and service learning opportunities for middle and high school teens from our surrounding neighborhoods.  Volunteer for one hour, one day, or on a regular basis.
  • Special Event Volunteers: We need volunteers to help with special events like our Race for Open Space, Fotostream photography show, and large group volunteer projects.
  • Group Projects: Have a corporate, school, scout, or church group that would like to volunteer?  There’s always trail work that needs to be done!

Contact Christina Harney at charney@sandcreekgreenway.org or 303-468-3264 for more information and to sign up to volunteer!
