Less than two miles from Central Park lies the City Park neighborhood.Made up of four quadrants (north, west, east and south) – each one is adjacent to some of Denver’s finest cultural attractions such as the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, the Denver Zoo, the IMAX theater and the City Park Golf Course, not to mention the neighborhood namesake.
In City Park North, you’ll find the newly opened Plimoth Neighborhood Eatery at 28th and Josephine. Named after the owner’s hometown in Massachusetts with a twist on the spelling, Plimoth boasts local seasonal cuisine with an Italian/French twist. Check out the “cracklin’ chicken with shrimp etouffeé” entree, one of the restaurant’s most popular dishes.
Need a haircut before heading to the museum or golf course? Swing by the upscale, multicultural barbershop, Wavy Salon at 3101 Josephine, where you’ll find some of Denver’s top barbers in a relaxing, almost spa-like atmosphere with reasonable prices.
In City Park West, the coifs of women and girls are catered to at Hairworks Beauty Salon located at 22nd and Lafayette. A longtime favorite in the community, Hairworks delivers beauty with a socially conscious mission in the form of free periodic blood pressure screenings and other health related services.
You’ll also find the historic St. Ignatius Loyola Church, as well as Bogey’s On the Park – a good-sized restaurant with a glorious outdoor patio that caters to the golf crowd and the non-golf crowd. It’s a great place to network with local business leaders and neighborhood residents.
Cornell’s Pharmacy, on the corner of E. 18th Avenue and Gaylord, is one of the last freestanding, independent neighborhood pharmacies in the area. It offers a full staff of pharmacists who know your name and provide fast, personalized service.
In City Park South, the warm summer months keep the neighborhood buzzing when the locals gather for fresh fare every Sunday (June 1 – October 26) Colorado Fresh Market located at City Park Esplanade near Sullivan Fountain.
From there, locals can enjoy the City Park Jazz series. City Park residents and those near and far come for a late afternoon casual picnic and to hear free evening jazz concerts in the park from the likes of the Hazel Miller Band and Gumbo Le Funque.
For the cultural enthusiast, the Black Arts Festival rules the park in July with three days of art from local and national artists, food, live music and community services.
